On Anna Fidler:
Description/statement:
Energy has been the overarching theme in Fidler’s work for the past ten years referencing topics such as photosynthesis, electricity, binaural rhythm patterns and their relationship to lucid dreams. Her work often utilizes elliptical narrative with a cast of characters stemming from non-existent fairy tales, science fiction books, and 19th century poetry. For her first Corvallis exhibition, Fidler will debut a new large work on paper Telepathy Quilt and exhibit it next to two earlier works from her Fantasy Basketball series from 2009 (Disjecta, Wieden & Kennedy, Portland). Telepathy Quilt is the first piece in over a decade where the artist works without photographic reference; instead depicting pure imaginative imagery. The inclusion of LA (LaMarcus Aldridge) and Greg Oden is inspired by the artist’s belief that athletes can learn to read each other’s minds on the court, utilizing a form of telepathy.

Biography: Anna Fidler. MFA, Studio Art, Portland State University. Fidler’s large-scale works on paper are composed of glittery mica-enriched acrylic washes and colored pencils. Her work depicts invented landscapes, mythical happenings, and unseen energy in the universe involving such diverse subject matter as basketball, vampires and rock stars. Her work has been exhibited worldwide in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Washington D.C and has been shown in The Portland Art Museum’s APEX series, The Boise Art Museum, The Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science, and Art, The University of Southern California, and The Japan Society in New York. Her exhibitions have been reviewed in Art in America, The Washington Post and The San Francisco Chronicle. Fidler has received numerous grants and awards, including an Oregon Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship, a Regional Arts and Culture Council Project Grant, and Residencies at Painting’s Edge in Idyllwild, California. Fidler is represented by Charles A. Hartman Fine Art in Portland, Oregon and Johansson Projects in Oakland, California. She recently moved to Corvallis, where she teaches art at Oregon State University.

Tropical Contemporary is a nomadic group of young, emerging contemporary artists in Eugene, Oregon who are working to instill a climate of contemporary discourse, critique and creation to the Eugene/Springfield area.

We feel the current microclimate of art in this area is barren and restrictive. Tropical hopes to challenge perceptions of what art is, why it current conventions of exhibition and discussion must be challenged, and encourage a fresh environment of thinkers and makers through art that creates dialogue around social and cultural histories, gender, identity, humor, material exploration and language. Our passion is combining our knowledge of contemporary art, as an active group of professional artists, and bringing that knowledge back to our community in the form of classes, performances, exhibitions, and music.

As a nomadic group, we seek so show in creative non traditional spaces. Our past shows have utilized unleased office spaces, residential dwellings, and rented moving trucks. While establishing a centralized gallery space would have benefits, we feel the best way to a rapid and sustainable change in the Eugene art community is to produce multiple pop-up gallery exhibitions, activities, and critique opportunities. Tropical is interested in all opportunities to utilize unused, unleased, or for sale commercial spaces, warehouses, garages, office buildings, grocery stores, etc. If you have a space and are interested in letting us utilize it for short periods of time, please contact us.
