The Surface of the Sky is an exhibition of reimagined works from Michael Boonstra. Drawings that were initially created over a decade ago in response to forest fires, are revisited and redrawn in ways that echo past works while also embodying elements of Boonstra’s current creative process.
Michael Boonstra’s current interests revolve around ideas of landscape representation, time scales, and perceptual phenomena. He examines these ideas through a creative process that continually shifts between drawing, photography, installation, and sculpture. Boonstra has received project funding from the Ford Family Foundation, and Ford Family Foundation sponsored residencies at Playa and the Djerassi Resident Artist Program as well as a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission, Boonstra has had recent solo exhibitions at Duplex in Portland, the A.N. Bush Gallery in Salem, and Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University. He is also a member of Gray Space Project, a collective of Oregon artists that examine landscape, site, and context through direct interventions.
Boonstra received his BFA from the University of Michigan and his MFA from the University of Oregon. He currently teaches at Oregon State University and lives Eugene, Oregon.
