Steve (Ph.D., M.Div.) is a documentary photographer, applied anthropologist & contemplative activist. His creative process is deeply shaped by accompanying and being accompanied by humanity living on the margins of empire, weaving our stories through the arts towards collective action and mutual liberation. Steve’s photography focuses on hope – hope found in the struggle and dignity of becoming human & the unmasking of illusions.
He has worked in nearly 30 countries around the world, most recently in Honduras and Mexico. He has traveled over the last four years to 21 US States documenting and participating in the undocumented youth-led struggle for freedom & human dignity. Steve most recently worked as a scholar activist at One Horizon Institute in Lexington, KY where he utilized arts-based methodologies to both better understand and build social justice movements. He is co-author, with Marco Saavedra, of the visual ethnography Shadows then Light and under contract for a co-authored book, The Eclipse of Dreams: Accompanying the Undocumented Youth-led Struggle for Freedom in the United States (Forthcoming 2016).
