Looking West: Exploring with the Corvallis Tree Being
Brief Description of Performance:  In Looking West; Exploring with The Corvallis Tree-Being, Kaitlyn Wittig Mengüç advocates for the restorative effect of embarking on summertime expeditions and the critical role immersive explorations play in regional conservation efforts. Drawing upon the mission set forth by The Native Plant Society of Oregon, “Dedicated to the enjoyment, conservation, and study of Oregon's native plants and habitats,” Wittig Mengüç prescribes adventures for the Summer. Utilizing the January 1989 “Bulletin of the Native Plant Society of Oregon”, the coordinates of various natural settings throughout the state of Oregon have been assigned to lines from the “Chapter News” promoting self-directed education through adventure. The Corvallis Tree Being is a Corvallis-based performance art series curated by Bruce Burris of ELandFProjects and OUTPOST1000, which features guest artists in conversation with the natural life in our neighborhoods. In this iteration, performance artist Kaitlyn Wittig Mengüç embodies The Corvallis Tree Being.

Biography: Kaitlyn Wittig  Mengüç is a performance artist and puppeteer working at the intersection of the arts, health, and cultural equity. Using performance and puppeteering as a medium, she seeks to explore the many and varied physical, economic, social, and political boundaries which surround us. In an attempt to limit waste and the commodification of artwork, her masks and puppets are constructed from recycled and reused materials. Kaitlyn received her BA in Theatre from the University of Pittsburgh and her MA in Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is a co-founder of the research-different arts service organization, Plural, which is dedicated to advancing equity in the arts through support of Canadian and US ethnocultural and community grounded arts organizations, artists, and arts administrators.
