My work aims to promote conversation addressing mental and emotional health issues. Other artwork addressing these themes tends to be visually off-putting. The images are often figural, depicting a brain that is broken, melting, or exploding. They are filled with sad expressions, with heads in hands, people sobbing or frowning, or people in agony, including a lot suicidal imagery. I want to dispose of the ‘sad’ stigma incorporated with mental health issues. Often sadness is used to describe depression which is used as an umbrella term for mental health issues. Emotions including sadness are experienced by all people. My goal in using mental health themes in my work is to create something beautiful, ornate, and also approachable, to generate a reaction to therapy and mental health issues that is more accepting.
