Ethnographer: Dana Reason
magnetic tape, paper, ink and plastic.
About the work:
An assemblage of ethnographies and sounds, this collection primarily documents practices in experimental, creative, contemporary, and post-1960s jazz music. This collection of audio recordings is part of a larger research project titled: The Myth of Absence: Representation, Reception and The Music of Experimental Women Improvisers (Available at Columbia University Jazz Studies Online) http://jazzstudiesonline.org/
“Pursing an ethnographically oriented methodology, I conducted interviews with a diverse community of composers, instrumentalists, technologists and improvisers. These artists include composer Pauline Oliveros; pianist Amina Claudine Myers; singer Maggie Nichols; multi-instrumentalist Maia Axe; violinist India Cooke; pianist Irene Schweizer; kotoist Miya Masaoka; scholar/cellist Georgina Borne; bassoonist Lindsay Cooper; drummer Susie Ibarra; technologist Ikue Mori; and pianist Marilyn Crispell, among others.
The above interviews led me to examine issues around canonicity, gendered receptivity, and inclusivity in contemporary music practices.
Other objects found in UNhearD: Iranian classical music; Soundings Radio Program (CKUT FM, Montreal); contemporary African-American Gospel; Detroit house music; Indian dance music, among others.
Dana Reason is a Canadian-born pianist, composer, improviser and music researcher. Reason was part of The Space Between trio with Pauline Oliveros and is documented on over 14 recordings. She has performed at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Banff Arts Festival, Stanford University, The Stone (NYC), as well as in Europe and Canada. Her scholarly research is available on Wesleyan University Press and Columbia Jazz-Studies On-line. Reason holds a B.Mus (McGill University); MA in Composition (Mills College); and Ph.D in Music: Critical Studies/Experimental Practices from the University of California, San Diego. Reason teaches Music Composition as well as courses in Popular Musicology at Oregon State University. This is her first conceptual art exhibit.
